Does Your Kirkland Remodel Need a Permit?
Kirkland Municipal Code 21.06.205 requires a permit before you build, alter, repair or demolish part of a house or its electrical, mechanical or plumbing systems. Smaller jobs can be exempt under KMC 21.06.215. Tick what your project includes to see which side of the line it falls on, based on the City of Kirkland’s Do you need a permit? list.

Remodeling in Kirkland: What to Plan For
Permits are filed online. Kirkland takes building permit applications through MyBuildingPermit.com, and plan review status and inspections are handled there too. For a single-family home, a pre-submittal meeting with city staff is optional. If you want one, it has to be booked at least 10 business days ahead (City of Kirkland).
Lakefront, slope and wetland lots. The city’s permit exemptions don’t apply in shoreline, steep slope, wetland or flood hazard areas. On those lots even a small job can need a permit, so we check the property before we price the work.
Finn Hill, North Juanita and Kingsgate. These neighborhoods were annexed into Kirkland from King County in 2011, so permits for homes there now go through the City of Kirkland.
